- A primary lung abscess develops usually as a result of an infection of the lung
- Pulmonary abscesses commonly arise from aspiration, necrotizing pneumonia or chronic pneumonia and can occur in setting of immunodeficiency
- Cavitation and abscess formation are particularly related to some organisms that are associated with necrotizing pneumonia such as S. Aureus, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, Proteus
